Advanced Spatial Sound Techniques

 

In short:
Sound 4 immerses students in the realm of spatial Sound, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to harness various spatial Sound techniques for both linear media and interactive video game applications. This 12-week course delves into advanced spatial Sound concepts such as channel-based Sound, object-based Sound, ambisonics, and binaural sound. Students explore the latest techniques in spatial Sound production, including recording, editing, and mixing in various immersive formats.

Learning goals and outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, students will have developed a deep understanding of spatial Sound principles and techniques, enabling them to create immersive Sound experiences for a variety of applications. Key learning objectives include:
1.    Mastery of various spatial Sound techniques, including channel-based Sound, ambisonics, object-based Sound, and binaural sound.
2.    Proficiency in recording, mixing, and exporting spatial Sound for both linear media and interactive video game applications.
3.    Ability to create 360° ambisonic sound scenes and mix videos in 5.1 surround sound format.
4.    Understanding of the latest trends and techniques in the rapidly evolving field of spatial Sound production.
5.    Competence in applying spatial Sound techniques to enhance storytelling and immersion in media productions.

 

Evaluation and assignments:
Evaluation for the course consists of two assignments throughout the semester, and an exam that consists of a combination of an exam assignment, a theory exam, and a practical test.

 

Tools:
Students will use Cockos Reaper alongside a selection of specialized plugins tailored for spatial Sound production. They will have access to our state-of-the-art 5.1 surround studio, equipped with advanced Sound monitoring systems for precise mixing and mastering. Additionally, students will employ binaural mixing techniques using over-ear headphones, allowing for accurate spatial perception and immersive Sound experiences.
